The machinery installation paired five Indret boilers with Rateau-Bretagne geared turbines driving four shafts. The nominal 80,000-shaft-horsepower plant was divided between machinery produced by two French builders, reflecting the industrial base behind the design. On 2 February 1934 the cruiser reached 32.93 knots while developing 93,230 shaft horsepower. Those trials show that Algérie's heavier protection did not require the low speed sometimes associated with better-armoured cruisers.
