The changes began with bridge alterations and an eight-metre stereoscopic rangefinder replacing the original five-metre instrument in the main director during 1937. Later work moved the light anti-aircraft mounts, upgraded another turret rangefinder, revised anti-aircraft control, and prepared the ship for the larger Loire 130 seaplane. A 1939-40 refit altered the funnel cap and introduced twin 37 mm mountings, followed by additional 13.2 mm weapons in 1941. The major 1942 refit replaced the tripod mast with a platform carrying still more light weapons. Even an admired treaty design needed repeated adaptation as wartime threats and equipment changed.
