Construction, acceptance, and a colonial name

Built at Brest, Algérie passed through overlapping completion, commissioning, modification, and acceptance dates and was named for a century of French rule in Algeria.

Notes

Algérie was ordered in 1930, laid down at Brest on 19 March 1931, and launched on 27 May 1932. Her commissioning, stated completion, and entry-into-service dates all fall in 1934 because they refer to separate stages. Trials led to further changes after commissioning before the navy finally accepted the complicated weapon system for service in October. Unlike many French capital ships named for people, Algérie commemorated a century of French rule in Algeria, giving the ship's identity a colonial and political meaning beyond its technical design.
