Algérie carried 2,035 tons of armour, substantially more than the 1,553 tons attributed to the preceding Dupleix design. Her 110 mm external belt worked with internal torpedo bulkheads that varied from 40 to 60 mm, making the belt one layer in a larger protective system. An 80 mm deck between those bulkheads, thinner deck armour outside them, and three 70 mm transverse bulkheads enclosed the vital spaces. Separate figures for the turret faces, roofs, sides, and rears show how displacement was distributed across a coherent armour scheme.

Algérie's unusually strong armour scheme
