Alexandria, the Gordon Relief Expedition, and public fame

Combat and expeditionary service made Beresford a national name, even as his conduct in Parliament continued to unsettle naval authorities.

Notes

Command of Condor during the bombardment of Alexandria supplied Beresford with the public reputation that his earlier appointments had not. He later served with the naval brigade on the Gordon Relief Expedition, surviving a machine-gun jam while under pressure. Returning from this service as a national figure helped him win further parliamentary seats. The sequence explains why his public heroism could coexist with Admiralty unease about how he used Parliament.
