Chapter · 29:46-32:10

Muzzle-loading gunnery at Alexandria

Monarch's 125 twelve-inch rounds at Alexandria included single aimed shots and unequal gun rhythms, with accuracy judged in the context of short ranges.

Notes

At Alexandria, Monarch fired 125 twelve-inch shells at the forts, often as single aimed rounds. The total need not be divisible by four because the guns could fire individually. The accuracy was impressive for the period, although the engagement ranges were relatively short. One gun in the forward turret appears to have maintained a faster rhythm, possibly because it had an especially effective crew. Sustaining that volume of fire from heavy muzzle-loading rifles demanded considerable effort, and the crews were probably exhausted after the bombardment.
