Why a specialist minelayer could not simply escape

Albatross's grounding demonstrates the basic trade-off between mine capacity, protection, and speed.

Notes

After a long minelaying mission, Albatross had little fuel margin and only a 20-knot maximum speed when ordered toward Swedish waters. The Russian cruisers Bayan and Oleg caught her, opened fire, and forced the burning ship aground. The chase illustrates why specialist minelayers devote displacement to mines rather than armour or powerful ship-to-ship weapons. Even after laying their mines, they cannot recover the protection or machinery weight sacrificed to carry the load. They therefore need speed, fuel margin, screening forces, and careful employment to survive once discovered.
