Albacores strike Vittorio Veneto at Cape Matapan

The first six-Albacore attack failed, but escorting Fulmars drove off Ju 88s while the carrier force continued its effort. A later mixed strike of three Albacores and two Swordfish placed an Albacore torpedo into the battleship Vittorio Veneto. A third wave found the cruiser Pola instead of the damaged battleship. The decisive hit on Pola was probably delivered by a Swordfish from 815 Naval Air Squadron joining Formidable's aircraft from Malta or Crete, which shows how mixed forces complicate simple credit for the battle.
