The Alaska class suffers more from timing than from an absence of useful qualities. Had the ships entered service around 1939, they could have made a strong contribution. Their actual arrival came after the circumstances that best justified the design had changed. The class illustrates why a warship must be judged against the period in which it becomes available as well as its specifications.

The Alaska class arrived after its best moment
Alaska-class large cruisers might have been highly useful in 1939, but their late arrival left a capable concept without the strategic moment it needed.
