Classification is an interpretive tool, not a substitute for examining a ship's intended opponent and mission. Alaska was designed to overpower cruisers but sat apart from conventional battleships, while the reconstructed Kongos approached the spectrum from an older battlecruiser design. Contemporary capital ships carried much heavier guns than Alaska, which helps explain the United States Navy's large-cruiser label. Displacement and official nomenclature alone cannot settle the question.
