Why Alaska is best understood as a very large heavy cruiser

The Alaska class looks like a battlecruiser when compared with First World War ships, but its Second World War role and scale better fit a powerful heavy cruiser.

Notes

Ship categories must be judged within their own period rather than by comparison with vessels from a generation earlier. Alaska would look like an exceptional battlecruiser beside a First World War ship, but contemporary Iowa and projected Montana battleships were much larger and more heavily armed. Radar, fire-control equipment, electrical generation, accommodation, speed, and additional weapons had increased the displacement of every category. A twelve-inch main battery was no longer a serious battleship armament in the 1940s. Alaska instead filled the cruiser requirement for a fast, hard-hitting vessel able to counter surface raiders and support carrier forces in greater numbers than capital ships. Calling her a heavy cruiser recognizes that useful role without diminishing the design through a supposedly less prestigious title.
