The Åland action's confused aftermath

Shell shortages, German fears of reinforcements, and HMS E9's torpedo attack turned the aftermath into a confused multinational disengagement.

Notes

After Albatross ran aground, Russian cruisers attempting to return to base encountered Roon and Lübeck in an artillery duel. The Russians withdrew after running out of shells, while the Germans also broke off because they expected major enemy reinforcements. Neither side could turn the encounter into a decisive pursuit; ammunition limits and incomplete information controlled the result. British submarine HMS E9 then torpedoed the armoured cruiser Prinz Adalbert as she hurried to reinforce the German squadron, forcing the damaged ship toward shore. Russian, German, and British forces all shaped the Baltic operation that followed Albatross's grounding.
