Akizuki combines electronic warfare with a balanced escort fit

Akizuki combines substantial electronic-warfare capability and a 32-cell VLS with the weapons and helicopter needed for general-purpose escort work.

Notes

Akizuki fits a 5-inch gun, eight anti-ship missiles, two Phalanx mounts, triple torpedo tubes, and thirty-two Mark 41 VLS cells into a ship of 5,000 tons standard and 6,800 tons full load. The VLS can carry ESSM and ASROC, while a Mitsubishi SH-60 supplies helicopter support. Its electronic-warfare capability is compared with that fitted to the Zumwalt class, drawing on translated excerpts from Makoto Yamazaki's October 2011 Ships of the World article. One page was missing from the copy consulted, so the comparison retains that source limitation. Sophisticated electronic warfare suits the general-purpose destroyers because they provide much of the fleet's routine presence. A mature combined-gas-and-gas propulsion arrangement completes a balanced design whose limited overseas uptake may partly reflect Japan's modest export effort before Mogami.
