An aircraft carrier can bring electrical power, medical facilities, personnel, and aviation to a disaster area. Aircraft and helicopters can search for survivors, carry aid, and support rescue work. A circulating story about engineers mistaking a relief deployment for a bombing mission is treated as a joke of doubtful authenticity. The capabilities used to explain the joke show why a carrier can be a useful relief platform despite its combat role.
