A carrier as an enabler, command ship, and national symbol

A carrier's value lies in the aircraft and command functions it enables, which helps explain why France values its nuclear-powered carrier despite its smaller scale than a US supercarrier.

Notes

A carrier is primarily the platform that makes an air group, command function, and wider task group possible rather than a conventional fighting ship by itself. Its military value therefore depends on hangar space, lifts, aircraft, and the systems that let those aircraft operate. The same logic applies if future aircraft are uncrewed: they still need to be designed for carrier launch, recovery, movement, and support. Charles de Gaulle is presented as a full-spectrum carrier even though it is much smaller than its American counterparts. Nuclear propulsion reinforces its capability and France's claim to world-power status, while logistics remain a practical constraint.
