How earlier airborne early warning changes carrier defence

Earlier AEW aircraft would push radar coverage and fighter direction outward, changing the distance at which a carrier force could detect and engage attackers.

Question

What difference could an earlier Avenger AEW aircraft have made in World War II?

Short answer

It would extend detection and fighter-control range, giving a carrier force a much earlier warning and engagement opportunity.

Notes

Airborne early warning moves the radar horizon well beyond the carrier force. A TBM-3W Avenger could detect incoming aircraft earlier than shipboard radar and pass that warning to the fighter direction system. With fighters carrying enough fuel, the combat air patrol could then operate farther forward and begin interceptions at a much greater distance. The advantage becomes especially strong after enemy carriers have been removed and the likely land airfields are known. Earlier warning would leave the carrier vulnerable, but commanders would have more time and space in which to organize the defence.
