The airborne early-warning compromise

Helicopter-based airborne early warning was inferior overall to Hawkeye but far better than the absence exposed in the Falklands.

Notes

Fixed-wing Hawkeye offered the stronger overall airborne early-warning system, although helicopter solutions could have situational advantages. A helicopter had less endurance, altitude, and coverage but could operate from the smaller decks Britain retained. The central comparison was therefore not one ideal system against another ideal system. It was a constrained organic warning capability against the complete absence of one at sea. The Falklands losses demonstrate why even the inferior option could materially improve fleet survival.
