Airborne early warning is the next carrier enabler

Fighters become a much stronger defensive system when an airborne sensor can extend warning and direct interceptions beyond the ship's horizon.

Notes

Airborne early warning is the first major enabler of carrier power because fighters are far less useful when the task group cannot detect and organize responses at distance. The Falklands War and later carrier experience show why a flight deck alone does not create a complete air-defence system. Britain's Crowsnest helicopter system offers an airborne-warning model compatible with a non-CATOBAR flight deck. The Royal Navy's planned movement toward a drone-based replacement may offer another route compatible with Izumo's deck. Japanese participation remains an expectation based on evident interest in British work, rather than an announced procurement program.
