A shorter war removes air-defence lessons but helps Crete

Avoiding the convoy battles costs operational learning even as a less divided command may defend Crete more effectively.

Notes

Removing the hard Mediterranean convoy war also removes a school in which British ships historically learned air-defence practice under pressure. Greece and Crete might still supply some experience, but less of the repeated operational learning produced by the Malta runs. At the same time, an ended Libyan campaign gives the Crete defence less divided leadership and more supplies. Even a modest improvement in command could turn the airborne assault into a much costlier failure. A retained fighter and bomber base on Crete would then support interdiction and make reinforcement from North Africa easier.
