Aid totals reveal Allied staging priorities

The distribution of American aid reflects who was fighting and where Allied troops and supply networks had to stage.

Notes

The British Empire received the largest share and the Soviet Union the next largest, but the figures are not treated as a simple ranking of importance. The recipient totals show whom the United States was reinforcing while also reflecting where American forces needed bases and supply networks. Britain served as the springboard for the campaign in Europe despite the Battle of the Atlantic's transport risk. Australia and Australasia played a comparable staging role for operations into Southeast Asia, so reinforcement followed operational geography as well as political priorities.
