How diplomatic labels signalled commitment

Alliance, entente, pact, and convention are treated as deliberately chosen labels that reveal different degrees of trust and obligation.

Notes

Britain had a formal alliance with Japan, an entente with France, a pact with Spain, and a convention with Russia. Those arrangements should not be collapsed into a single alliance system. The chosen nouns register how much confidence British officials placed in each partner, with Japan receiving the strongest formulation and Russia the most guarded. Their differing language helps explain why an agreement could guide policy without automatically creating a war commitment.
