After Force K, Agnew commanded the specialist light cruiser HMS Dido and the 12th Cruiser Squadron. He then led HMS Excellent, whose wartime gunnery training remained critical throughout 1944-45. Vanguard followed, first as her commissioning captain and later as the first admiral to hoist his flag aboard her. The sequence shows the Royal Navy trusting him not only with ships at sea but also with the institution that produced its gunners and the introduction of a major new capital ship.
