Clues behind the hypothetical 18-inch Agincourt

The 15-inch-special designation, construction timing, and otherwise unexplained machinery are presented as circumstantial clues for an unbuilt 18-inch capital ship.

Notes

The hypothetical design is called 'Jellicoe's baby' because Jellicoe had pressed first for 15-inch and then larger guns. The 18-inch weapons later used by Furious were procured under the label '15-inch specials' and appeared too early to have been designed solely for that ship. A one-off Agincourt project is offered as a possible original destination for the weapons. Small-tube boilers that later appeared in Renown, Repulse, and other ships provide an additional clue in this reconstruction. These are explicitly circumstantial design and procurement inferences, not a documentary order proving that the ship was authorized.
