Age, experience, and promotion before Trafalgar

Collingwood's forty-four years of service and ten-year age advantage over Nelson show why age, rank, and professional breadth were not the same thing.

Notes

Collingwood entered the Royal Navy before his thirteenth birthday and had served for forty-four years by Trafalgar. At fifty-seven he was ten years older than Nelson, even though Nelson was the senior officer in rank. The contrast shows that the Royal Navy did not promote solely by age or accumulated service. Exceptional brilliance could move one officer ahead while an unusually capable all-rounder advanced on a different curve. The distinction helps explain why Nelson commanded the battle while relying on Collingwood's greater age, breadth, and shared experience.
