Chapter ยท 46:34-48:45

Africa destroyed as the action breaks apart

The Spanish line scattered after the close action; Africa was driven ashore and destroyed while other damaged ships escaped toward Havana.

Notes

Once Warwick caught up, the surviving Spanish ships tried to save themselves while the British divided between firing on Africa and pursuing Invencible. Damage to Cornwall and the other pursuers prevented them from converting the retreat into a more complete destruction of Reggio's squadron. Africa lost her masts, was run ashore and burned by her crew, then exploded under continuing British cannon fire. Conquistador was captured and Invencible badly damaged, while the reported losses were 86 Spanish dead, 197 wounded, and 470 captured against 59 British dead and 120 wounded.
