Aegis has received continuing updates and upgrades. Its original introduction date therefore does not describe the capability of every later version. The same mistake can affect comparisons of radar families when their names survive through successive improvements. Assessing the version in service gives a more useful comparison than treating the entire family as unchanged.

Why Aegis cannot be dated by its first version
Continuing upgrades make a system's current version more informative than the date when its original name appeared.
