Gaius Lutatius Catulus entered the 242 BC campaign after rising from cavalry service through the Roman offices. His co-consul's priesthood of Mars prevented him from leaving Rome, so the praetor Quintus Valerius Falto became Catulus's deputy. Both commanders brought substantial experience to the force. Their authority continued into 241 BC as proconsul and propraetor because the campaign was still under way. When Catulus was injured during the siege of Drepana, Falto could take operational command. Falto later became consul in 239 BC, continuing the progression from military service to higher office.
