Peace in 241 BC and the Mercenary War

Unpaid troops and revolt in dependent territories plunged Carthage into another war immediately after peace with Rome.

Notes

After Aegates, a new faction gained power in Carthage and sought peace in 241 BC. Peace was followed by a dispute over wages owed to about 20,000 foreign soldiers who had served in Sicily. Roughly 70,000 people from Carthage's dependent African territories joined the revolt. Hamilcar Barca returned from the Sicilian campaigns and became central to defeating the rebels. By 237 BC, most had been defeated and their cities brought back under Carthaginian rule.
