The islands shape the blockade route

The Aegates Islands offered currents and sailing routes toward the besieged ports, turning geography into a decisive operational constraint.

Notes

The Carthaginian fleet needed the islands as a staging point for the run into western Sicily. Favourable currents and sailing conditions made the route toward Drepana and Lilybaeum useful to a relief force approaching from Carthage. The same predictable route gave the Roman blockade a place to watch and intercept. This is the strategic geography behind the battle: a fleet could not treat the sea as open space when wind, currents, islands, and harbours narrowed its options.
