Falto's disputed triumph

The argument over Falto's triumph reveals how battlefield credit, office, popular politics, and future promotion interacted in Republican Rome.

Notes

Falto took operational command after Catulus was injured and then sought a share in the victory honors. Formal arbitration rejected his claim because he had been the inferior officer, but popular protest insisted that his conduct deserved recognition. One interpretation is that Catulus resisted sharing his own triumph while still supporting a separate honor for Falto. That outcome rewarded the deputy's conduct and strengthened an ally who would become consul in 239 BC.
