What Carthage's ship sheds reveal about fleet care

The military harbour's shed dimensions and seasonal routines turn naval infrastructure into evidence for Carthaginian fleet composition and maintenance.

Notes

Most of Carthage's military-harbour bays could accommodate vessels about 4.8 metres wide. Two wider openings, about seven metres across, may have housed larger flagships. These dimensions offer clues to fleet composition, although surviving knowledge of Carthaginian ships is limited. Hauling wooden warships out after the campaigning season let crews dry, inspect and season their hulls away from winter storms. Temporary structures could accommodate additional large ships, so the permanent sheds need not define the wartime fleet's maximum size.
