Chapter · 0:38-2:25

Carthage's high-risk relief attempt

Carthage's fleet had to break the Roman blockade, resupply Sicily, embark an army, and only then seek battle.

Notes

The Carthaginian plan depended on reaching the besieged Sicilian ports before the Romans could intervene. Its ships were short of trained sailors, marines, and experienced commanders, while the intended reinforcement was still ashore. The fleet first had to run the blockade, unload supplies, and embark the experienced army defending the ports before it could fight on favourable terms. That sequence made the operation a logistical gamble rather than a straightforward attempt to win a fleet action.
