An adversarial field exercise makes counterintelligence concrete

An extraction team and a surveillance team pursue conflicting objectives in a five-day Cambridge intelligence exercise.

Notes

Civilian cases, historical operations with relatively clear evidence, and uncertain current events pose different problems for intelligence students. Alex Clarke recalls pairing his future-of-war students at a Cambridge summer school with another tutor's espionage group for an exercise over five days. One group had to move a known person across the city and return that person safely to campus. The other had to surveil the team, identify the target, intercept the movement, and capture the person. The opposing assignments made each group's success depend on anticipating an active opponent.
