From programme to commission: an interwar specialist

Pluton's programme followed the British minelaying cruiser HMS Adventure, then took several years to produce a commissioned French ship.

Notes

Pluton's conception followed HMS Adventure, the Royal Navy's large minelaying cruiser, whose arrival in service stimulated the French programme. The programme began around 1925, but Pluton was not laid down until 1928, launched in 1929, and commissioned in 1932. Construction cost more than 102 million francs, and the Lorient naval arsenal built her. The chronology places several years and substantial funding between the programme's beginning and the specialist ship's arrival in the fleet.
