Why the Adriatic became a littoral grudge match

The World War I Adriatic was a confined littoral theater where French difficulties and Italy's entry produced an unusually bitter naval contest.

Notes

The Adriatic was an overlooked example of warfare in confined coastal waters. The French Navy entered with ambitious plans and substantial ships but repeatedly struggled to convert that strength into effective operations. Austro-Hungarian forces exploited the resulting freedom of action. Italy's entry in May 1915 transformed the campaign into a bitter contest, with opening bombardments following the declaration of war almost immediately.
