Chapter · 0:56-5:20

An Adriatic dreadnought battle that never happened

The scenario imagines Italy's Francesco Caracciolo-class fast battleships meeting Austria-Hungary's Ersatz Monarch-class ships if war had been delayed until 1918.

Notes

The hypothetical tests a major dreadnought encounter that the actual outbreak of war in 1914 prevented. Italy would probably have had the numerical advantage, while the Austro-Hungarian ships could have concentrated a capable, well-built battle fleet. Unlike the familiar Anglo-German comparison, neither side enters this matchup with an overwhelming industrial or numerical presumption of victory. The comparison shows how industrial capacity, ship quality, force availability, and the timing of war shape the historical record.
