Politics behind Royal Navy turret choices

The resistance to triple turrets may have been political as much as technical, with strong personalities shaping what the Admiralty would accept.

Notes

The choice between triple turrets and other arrangements cannot be reduced to a clean technical calculation. A claim about the Leander-class design process says that if four turrets were unachievable, the Board may have preferred single-gun mountings to three twins. Admiral Henderson's influence over 1930s ship construction shows how an institutional preference could collide with a forceful individual. A nominal Board preference did not automatically survive contact with the officer empowered to implement it. Naval design decisions therefore have to be read through authority and politics as well as engineering.
