The Admiralty's continuous warship design laboratory

The Director of Naval Construction maintained a stream of unbuilt studies that let the Admiralty test ambitious ideas before a formal ship program existed.

Notes

The organization around the Director of Naval Construction operated as a large, continuing design think tank. Its naval architects produced many studies that never became ships but preserved alternatives and developed technical knowledge. A forceful First Lord such as Winston Churchill could direct that capacity toward unusually ambitious concepts. One remembered archival sketch shows a battleship with four quadruple 16-inch turrets, an extreme example of the design space explored even when no ship followed. The surviving studies show how continuous institutional design work shaped the options available when policy and money aligned.
