Effingham became Sir Charles Howard in 1572 and inherited his father's title the following year. He then sponsored a playing company first known as Nottingham's Men and later as the Admiral's Men. Such patronage displayed cultural influence and the wealth required to sustain performers at court. His 1575 election to the Order of the Garter replaced the executed Thomas Howard, preserving a Howard place in a prestigious institution. Tudor office, family continuity, artistic patronage, and political status reinforced one another.
