Admiral Spaun and Novara class design comparison

The two designs shared 27-knot performance, while the Novara class simplified propulsion and added guns, torpedoes, and limited gun shields.

Notes

These were more capable scout cruisers than the Royal Navy's early examples, with turbines, a 60 mm belt, a 20 mm armoured deck, and useful torpedo armament. Admiral Spaun used four shafts, whereas the Novara class achieved similar practical speed with two turbine sets and two shafts. At full load, the later ships displaced 417 tons more without losing their roughly 27-knot performance. Admiral Spaun began with two 18-inch torpedo tubes and later received four 21-inch tubes. The Novara class mounted nine rather than seven 100 mm guns and six 21-inch torpedo tubes. Their 8 mm gun shields offered splinter and machine-gun protection rather than meaningful resistance to naval shells.
