Chapter · 10:14-15:17

Somerville's early life and entry into the Royal Navy

Somerville's family background and entry into Britannia begin a naval career closely tied to battleships and the Home Fleet.

Notes

James Somerville was born in 1882 into a well-read family whose background might otherwise have led him toward the civil or imperial service. He entered Britannia before his fifteenth birthday, on 15 January 1897. As an admiral of the fleet, he moved to the inactive list and remained available for recall and advice. He spent most of his career in battleships and with the Home Fleet. That long capital-ship background later shaped both his strengths and the limits of his experience as a senior commander.
