Spanish admiral names reflect Spain's own measure of honour

A commander remembered for losing to Britain may still represent honourable and successful service from a Spanish perspective.

Notes

Ship names make more sense when judged within the navy that chose them. A Spanish admiral remembered chiefly for losing to Britain may also have completed important missions, won other engagements, and served honourably. One defeat does not erase the rest of an officer's career or the honour attached to it in Spanish memory. The choice commemorates service according to Spanish standards rather than a British tally of victories.
