Senior leaders inspect Admiral Makarov at Baltiysk

Admiral Makarov's preparation for a Northern Fleet voyage draws a defence-ministerial visit with Admiral Gorshkov before the unusual hangar arrangement comes into view.

Notes

Admiral Makarov moved to Baltiysk while preparing for its voyage to the Northern Fleet after construction at Leningrad's Zhdanov shipyard. In 1972 the Soviet defence minister and Admiral Sergei Gorshkov inspected the new cruiser. Their visit connects the work of preparing one hull with senior oversight of the Navy's developing Kresta program. The ship's appearance then introduces the retractable hangar arrangement examined in the following section.
