Completed capital-ship plans and the move to fast battleships

Completing the earlier capital-ship programme could lead Britain towards fast battleships and reduce the need for another Repulse-type battlecruiser.

Question

If the earlier capital-ship programme were completed as planned, would the Admiralty still build another Repulse-type battlecruiser?

Short answer

Probably not. A working fast-battleship design would encourage further fast battleships, especially after Jutland.

Notes

An additional Repulse-type ship is considered unlikely if the earlier capital-ship programme proceeds as planned. The expected direction is towards the Admiral class and fast battleships. Clarke and Drach disagree over whether an earlier proposed design would receive 18-inch guns or triple 15-inch mountings, but agree on small-tube boilers derived from the Courageous and Glorious work. If the resulting fast battleship performs as intended, further orders would favour that type, especially after Jutland.
