Admiral Bey illustrates the great-captain trap

Erich Bey shows how mastery of one ship can become a weakness when an officer must stop centering decisions on the flagship and command a whole formation.

Notes

Erich Bey illustrates the difference between promotion and successful adaptation to a new level of command. Bey was a very capable captain, but his higher commands remained too strongly focused on the ship carrying his flag. Fleet command requires the admiral to treat every ship as part of the formation's mission rather than as an extension of the flagship. His example makes the central warning concrete: exceptional captaincy can reinforce habits that must be deliberately unlearned before an officer can become an effective admiral.
