Why leaders must build an effective command team

Leaders need advisers with complementary skills and must judge whether different personalities can work together.

Notes

Political skill, public communication and administrative competence are separate abilities, and finding all of them in one person is difficult. A leader therefore needs capable advisers and must be willing to listen to them. Building that team is a skill in its own right because complementary abilities and conflicting personalities have to be balanced. Ordinary group projects may miss this work when teachers assign the members or friends choose one another without considering the task's full needs. Choosing friends can leave a group with duplicated abilities and missing skills, so team selection needs attention alongside teamwork itself.
