Administrative disbandment can hide real continuity

A short paper gap in 809 Squadron's history did not represent the disappearance of its people and aircraft, illustrating how official force reductions can differ from operational reality.

Notes

The March-to-May 1956 gap appears to have been an administrative event rather than a genuine break in the unit's life. Tracking the aircraft and personnel suggests that they did not disperse before 809 reformed with the same Sea Venom role. The paperwork allowed one authority to say the squadron had been cut and another to raise it again soon afterward. An official disbandment date therefore did not automatically mean the loss of an experienced operational organization.
