Chapter · 46:48-48:58

Adelaide intercepts the blockade runner Ramses

Adelaide's Indian Ocean escort service culminated in identifying and sinking the disguised German blockade runner Ramses in November 1942.

Notes

After further anti-aircraft work and service during the Sydney Harbour submarine attack, Adelaide escorted convoys from Fremantle. During a multinational escort mission in the southern Indian Ocean, her crew challenged a vessel claiming Norwegian identity and recognized it as Ramses. The cruiser opened fire after the Germans began lowering boats and scuttling their ship, scoring from the third salvo. Adelaide ensured the blockade runner sank and recovered its crew, proving that an aging cruiser could still perform useful wartime service.
