Sources use differing Japanese rank terms for Adams, but the position amounts to direct vassalage to the shogun. A promotion around 1605 is associated with a new name, territorial responsibility and authorization for Dutch trade. Further rewards around 1607 brought responsibility for lands and their samurai in an area now within Yokosuka. This connection explains the location of the memorial introduced at the beginning of the video. When Hidetada became shogun, Ieyasu retained a separate centre of authority at Sunpu Castle. Adams remained within that circle and continued to receive rewards.
