Acoustic profiles turn ocean noise into contacts

Learn why knowing a submarine's characteristic sound matters more than simply owning an extremely sensitive hydrophone.

Notes

The ocean contains too much competing sound for raw sensitivity alone to solve detection. Even a theoretical profile inferred from available intelligence narrows the range of sounds that computers and operators must examine. A recorded acoustic signature provides a still stronger filter for particular machinery and propeller characteristics, much as a familiar singer can be distinguished within a choir. Long-range detection depends on sensor reach and on the surveillance system knowing which pattern to match.
